The benefits of Ashwagandha have been known for centuries, and this herb served as a universal remedy for more then four thousand years. Here are some applications of this universal herb in Indian traditional medicine. Bitter leaves and root are used as hypnotic in treating alcoholism and emphysematous dyspnoea. Root also prevents premature decay, infuses vigor and energy in a system worn out due to constitutional disease like rheumatic fever, syphilis or trivial overwork.

For impotence or seminal debility powder of the root mixed with ghee and honey in equal parts is prescribed, it is usually recommended to be taken in the evening with milk. Curing the sterility of women is another ayurvedic application of ashwagandha - boil down decoction of ashvagandha, milk and ghee and take this for a few days, soon after the menstrual period.

Spermatorrhoea and loss of strength are handled with the preparation consisting of Asvagandha, sugar, ghee, honey and long pepper. This powder usually given daily, with milk and rice diet. For skin diseases apply ashwagandha powder well mixed with oil to the skin; eyesight is improved with the help of a mixture of Ashvagandha powder, liquorice powder and juice of emblic myrobalans. Drops are applied into the nose in cases of deafness or rubbed into skin for handling hemiplegia, tetanus, rheumatism, and lumbago.
