Cayenne Pepper at a Glace
Biological Description
Cayenne botanical name is Capsicum frutescens, but it has many colloquial names, such as African pepper, American pepper, bird pepper, chili pepper, pod pepper, red pepper and others. It belongs to the Solanaceae family, which includes over 130 species.

Cayenne is a perennial shrub, which grows to a height of about three feet. The stem of the plant is glabrous and woody at the bottom and branchy at the top. Ovate to lanceolate leaves are dark-green and smooth. They are situated on the medium-sized petioles.

The flowers of this plant can be colored either white or yellow. They are situated on the long slender peduncles, which makes the flowers droop. The fruit of Cayenne – pepper - is a long hollow pod with multiple (from ten to twenty-nine) small, flat seeds inside. Ripe pepper is colored green, red, orange, or yellow. It has characteristic pungent smell and taste.

Cayenne pepper is native to Central and South America and Zanzibar. It grows mainly in tropical or subtropical climatic regions. If Cayenne is grown outside these zones it turns into an annual plant.

American pepper prefers well-drained sunny locations, rich and well-composted soil, and warm weather. Frost is the worst enemy of Cayenne.

Parts Used
Hot, spicy, and pungent fruit is the part of Cayenne, which is nowadays used in folk medicine, as well as in traditional cuisines, the same as it was used 9,000 years ago by Native Americans.
Since Cayenne has always been a popular herbal remedy, it can be found on the market in many different forms: extracts and tinctures, powder and capsules with the dried pepper, and creams for topical use.
Cayenne pepper is a source of different vitamins and minerals; it contains vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, calcium, niacin and iron. Fatty acids, pectin, and xanthenes are also among the Cayenne components.

Such constituents as carotenoids and flavonoids are highly praised by herbalists due to their ant-oxidant and anti-aging properties. Chili pepper also contains them, thus possessing the above mentioned virtues.

However, the most important and valuable ingredient of Cayenne is capsaicin – a component, which is considered to be a very effective pain killer. Scientists suggest that capsaicin reduces substance P, a chemical which transmits pain messages to the brain. Being suppressed by capsaicin, substance P cannot fulfil its duty and inform the brain about the pain in the area, where the pain-killing agent is applied; therefore, a person feels pain relief.

Health Benefits
Chemical structure of Cayenne defines its health benefits. Thus, red pepper is most commonly known and used as an effective pain killer. Such conditions as arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint, muscle, and nerve pain of different origins are treated and lessened with the help of Cayenne topical preparations.

Painful skin conditions (for example, herpes or psoriasis), post-surgical pain, and low back pain are also relieved by Cayenne constituents. There is data, which reports that even cluster headaches diminish after capsaicin is applied onto the nose area.

Taken orally, Cayenne pepper is said to reduce fever and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. In addition, it fights off bacteria and improves digestion by stimulating the production of digestive juices in the stomach.

Loss of appetite, diarrhea, hypertension - the range of health disorders, which can be treated with Cayenne, is wide and diverse. It can soon be widened even more, since many studies are being conducted to find out what other health conditions can be overwhelmed with the help of the red hot chili pepper.
