Cayenne is a perennial shrub, which grows to a height of about three feet. The stem of the plant is glabrous and woody at the bottom and branchy at the top. Ovate to lanceolate leaves are dark-green and smooth. They are situated on the medium-sized petioles.
The flowers of this plant can be colored either white or yellow. They are situated on the long slender peduncles, which makes the flowers droop. The fruit of Cayenne – pepper - is a long hollow pod with multiple (from ten to twenty-nine) small, flat seeds inside. Ripe pepper is colored green, red, orange, or yellow. It has characteristic pungent smell and taste.
American pepper prefers well-drained sunny locations, rich and well-composted soil, and warm weather. Frost is the worst enemy of Cayenne.
Such constituents as carotenoids and flavonoids are highly praised by herbalists due to their ant-oxidant and anti-aging properties. Chili pepper also contains them, thus possessing the above mentioned virtues.
However, the most important and valuable ingredient of Cayenne is capsaicin – a component, which is considered to be a very effective pain killer. Scientists suggest that capsaicin reduces substance P, a chemical which transmits pain messages to the brain. Being suppressed by capsaicin, substance P cannot fulfil its duty and inform the brain about the pain in the area, where the pain-killing agent is applied; therefore, a person feels pain relief.
Painful skin conditions (for example, herpes or psoriasis), post-surgical pain, and low back pain are also relieved by Cayenne constituents. There is data, which reports that even cluster headaches diminish after capsaicin is applied onto the nose area.
Taken orally, Cayenne pepper is said to reduce fever and lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels. In addition, it fights off bacteria and improves digestion by stimulating the production of digestive juices in the stomach.
Loss of appetite, diarrhea, hypertension - the range of health disorders, which can be treated with Cayenne, is wide and diverse. It can soon be widened even more, since many studies are being conducted to find out what other health conditions can be overwhelmed with the help of the red hot chili pepper.
