Echinacea Use in Immune-compromised People

Every single thing in the world requires “the right time and the right place”. In another case it will definitely have its “buts”. Even the best things may seem questionable, controversial, and improper in some situations. All of them may have contraindications under the certain circumstances.

Echinacea is not an exception. Centuries of its successful use, dozens of scientific trials, proving its efficacy and safety, and millions of people, who felt the plant’s positive influence, do not exclude the possibility of its contraindications.

Many scientists suggest that not all the people can safely use Echinacea; others confirm it is beneficial for everyone. Since this is a very disputable topic, it is necessary to study the arguments of those, who are for and against, because both sides conduct the studies, give their reasons, and show proofs of their claims.

So, the main controversy is seen in the question whether people with the weakened immune system can use the herb with no harm, even with benefits to their health. (Remember that immune system is exactly where Echinacea works by stimulating its activity and increasing the number of cells, responsible for fighting off viruses and germs, which attack a body; it also increases the amount of interferon, interleukin and immunoglobulin.) People, who belong to this group, are sufferers from tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV and AIDS (to cut it short, from the progressive systemic disorders and auto-immune conditions).

Let us at first discover why many scientists, doctors, and herbalists do not recommend using Echinacea in the above described cases. Their main reasoning is that over activity and imbalances of the immune system, peculiar to those diseases, may be aggravated by Echinacea action. Therefore, it is dangerous to stimulate such immune systems.

For example, in the complicated cases of tuberculosis the body’s own immune system may start destroying lung tissue, contaminated with tuberculosis germs, in a process similar to auto-immunity. This will result in further release of even more viruses into the surrounding tissues. Therefore, if the destruction comes from the immune system itself, stimulating it will lead to the faster development of the disease.

AIDS is believed by some scholars to have an autoimmune component, too. Thus, the immune system, boosted by Echinacea, may start attacking itself more than ever.

In case of leukemia the white blood cells count is elevated. Echinacea also promotes the increase in their number. It is logically to suppose that the condition thus will be aggravated.

As for the HIV, Echinacea may possibly work by stimulating the replication of T-cells, contaminated with the given virus.

All these facts sound very convincing. However, there are many claims that all these statements are based on theoretical considerations rather than on practical evidences. There is no data on the conducted trials to prove these suggestions.

On the other hand, there can often be found information about the successful use of Echinacea in all the above described cases. Furthermore, some doctors even practice long-term Echinacea treatment (which is commonly not recommended) with high doses of the plant’s extracts.

It is also reported about multiple trials to prove the positive effect of Echinacea and its efficacy in fighting the listed diseases. The preliminary results of some studies even show the dramatic improvement in the state of health of the immune-compromised persons. However, for the unknown reason the final official conclusions are never made and the results are not published.

Consequently, the question is still open, requiring further studying and research. Therefore, it is better to avoid using Echinacea by persons with the immune system imbalances, till any final official statements are made by the scientists.
