Ephedra: Treats You and Hits You

When it goes about using herbs for weight loss and stimulating athletic performance, the action of Ephedra’s alkaloids have been one of the most discussable topics lately. Its active compounds are structurally related to amphetamines and act stimulating the central nervous system. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (the major herb’s components) are generally used in some dietary supplement products that are released for the mentioned purposes. Its effect for the weight loss is especially evident when ephedrine is used in combinations with caffeine; result is gained rather fast (less then 6 months).

But at the same time the side effects of ephedrine is the thing to be careful with. While Ephedra’s alkaloids treat bronchial asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, persistent coughs, wheezing and shortness of breath, can help the body to break fevers and clear blocked sinuses, they also cause the raise of the blood pressure and can injure heart muscle. Among the other side effects are nervousness, sleeplessness, cardiac arrhythmia's and heart disease, weakness, exaggerated reflexes, muscle aches, muscle damage, depression, mania, agitation, suicidal ideas, or Parkinson's disease-like symptoms.

Ephedra can cause chest tightness, irregular heart rhythms, inflammation of the heart, fluid retention in the lungs, breathing difficulties, coronary dissection, thrombosis, or cardiac arrest. It should be used with extreme caution if you have kidney disease or prostate because there is a risk of liver damage, kidney stones, difficulty passing urine or pain when urinating.

To avoid the mentioned, first, the careful dosing should be followed. The recommendations of herbalists and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) differ but it is preferable not to take more than 25mg of Ephedra alkaloids daily (the official rule). Because of the risk of toxicity and death, Ephedra is not recommended for children at all. If you previously had strokes or experienced ischemic attacks, have tremor, or insomnia – Ephedra is not for you. It is also not recommended during the pregnancy and nursing. Some researches state that Ephedra may lower blood sugar levels, so be careful if you are affected by diabetes or hypoglycemia, or if the drugs, supplements or herbs you are taking affect blood sugar.

Another precaution is for those who are expecting surgical or diagnostic procedures – Ephedra should not be used at least one week prior to the mentioned events.

Due to its dangerous effects, FDA released many restrictions on the production of Ephedra. The labels of the product must contain the warning that it should not be used consistently for more than seven days.

So being careful with Ephedra is the guarantee it will help and not hurt you.
