Ginger : Spicing Up

The aromatic and healing abilities of ginger root, or Zingiber officinale (its botanical name), have been known for centuries. For more than 2000 years in Chinese and Indian herbal medicine its abilities to aid digestion and treat nausea and vomiting have been successfully used. Colic, arthritis, diarrhea, and heart conditions have also been treated with ginger since ancient times.

But the great merit of the ginger root is also in its wide use as an aromatic addition in the culinary. It not only helps the stomach to digest the food, but also makes the food tastier and spicier in a variety of ways. The infamous ginger bread, for example, is not an invention of the recent bakery. During the ancient times Greeks wrapped ginger in bread to avoid upset stomach that happened as a result of huge feasts. Nowadays the variety of foods featuring ginger as an aromatic addition is countless. You may enjoy ginger foods and drinks - ginger bread, ginger snaps, ginger sticks, ginger ale and something that has been just produced a week ago by the food industry.

Ginger is available in a variety of forms you can find both in the herbal shop and the product market. They include dried ginger powder, fresh root, pickled ginger, gingeer tea and oils and what not.

So, you decided to buy the fresh root at the local market and cook something with it. Before using ginger root for the culinary purposes, it should be thoroughly washed and peeled from the brown skin. It is commonly used minced or julienned in stir-fry recipes – breads, cookies, barbeque sauces, jellies and jams. The taste of the culinary masterpiece you decided to make will depend upon the time when it is added during the cooking. The later you add ginger during the process, the more pungent will be the taste.

You may also use ginger to add the accent to your favorite dishes. Rice dishes will taste differently if you sprinkle grated ginger and sesame seeds on top. Ginger with garlic, tamari and olive oil will make piquant salad dressing. A Puréed sweet potato with lemon juice and ginger is a great breakfast for the kids who usually have special gastronomic preferences. Freshly minced root is a great addition to the healthy sautéed vegetables.

You may freely experiment – ginger use is hardly restricted and there are no allergic reactions to this plant that have ever been reported. Moreover, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese and vitamin B6 are the elements ginger contains and nourishes your body with.

Ginger is on the way to your dishes. Spice up! Bon appetite!
