Throughout the years, more than four hundred studies have been conducted on Ginkgo and its restorative powers. A widely used herb, ginkgo has been given credit as a digestive aid, alleviator of respiratory problems, and restorer of memory. Parts of the ginkgo tree, the oldest tree species, have been used for centuries to treat medical conditions. The ancient Chinese, well-known for herbal remedies, have been using ginkgo for over five thousand years. As with the use of many plants, the specific characteristics of the plant have been taken into consideration for treatments. Ginkgo Biloba’s biggest claim to fame is the power it has to improve cerebral functioning. As we age, the brain suffers the loss of cells, insufficient blood circulation, and a decrease in the level of glucose brought to it. This results in increased difficulty memorizing information, slower reaction time, and possibly even a depressed state of mood. Today, ginkgo is widely used in France, Germany, and the United States. In Europe, this herb has already been given status for medical use. The ginkgo extract has undergone numerous and extensive laboratory testing for its efficacy and safety. The testing for phytomedicines, or plant based medicines, is generally very intensive. Scientists have concluded that the healing properties of ginkgo are due to its composition of flavonoids, powerful antioxidants, and two kinds of terpene lactones. The ginkgo flavonoids play a role in protecting the body’s blood vessels and in keeping them strong. The flavonoids also act as a buddy to Vitamin C, helping it to be more effective in smaller doses. The terpene lactones found in ginkgo may help to protect nerve cells and stimulate their repair if they become damaged. Glucose absorption is also increased through the presence of the terpene lactones. Together, this promotes good health, more energy, and an improved nervous system. Ginkgo has been credited with the ability to boost production of ATP, adenosine triphosphate, the body’s energy molecule. Every athlete and bodybuilder is concerned with increasing their energy output, and specifically the production of more ATP. Ginkgo supplements have also been used for cognitive enhancement. When treating memory loss, ginkgo works best when using small doses over time. If effective, not only will memory improve, but the individual’s mood should also lighten to a more positive level. Ginkgo supplements have a reputation for benefiting individuals who have any of the following conditions, in addition to the ones already listed: leg cramps, menstrual cramps, ringing in the ears, and impotence. Results vary with individuals and more studies need to be conducted. The side effects one might experience are few. Only minor headaches and stomach indigestion seem to be indicated. No drug interactions seem to be an issue either. Ginkgo supplements, in varying strengths, are available in capsules, softgels, and tablets. Dried leaves for making tea are also available. Powders, as well as dried extracts, are readily available. They can be purchased in stores and on-line. As with any supplement, a physician should be consulted prior to incorporating ginkgo supplements in your dietary plan.
