Grapes Wouldn't Be Grapes Without Seeds

It is difficult now to imagine life without grape plant. So many stories, traditions, culinary and ceremony uses have been worshiped by humanity since ancient times that the history would be different if it were not for the grape and related vine culture.

Grapes originate from Asia, the territory near the Caspian Sea, to be precise. Despite the fact that Egyptians were known to consume this fruit six thousand years ago, grapes were first brought to Northern America and Europe in the beginning of the 17th century. Since then beneficial effects of the fruit were used in preparing ointments to treat skin and eye diseases, stop pain, bleeding and inflammation. Unripe grapes served for the remedy preparations treating sore throat, while raisins were known to heal consumption, constipation, and thirst. Modern and herbal medicine still uses those recipes of various treatments.

The grapes differ in shapes and colors – they may be oval and round, red, green or purple. Grape’s stem bark tends to peel and the large jagged leaves of the plant are attached to the plant’s climbing vine.

A grape gardening is long and complicated process. The plant favors any well drained soil and good sun exposure. Either in fall or early spring the 1 – or 2-year-old vines are planted in the large hole to allow the full spreading of the roots. The canes arising from the buds are allowed to grow and the next year one cane is cut to the same number of eyes as the previous year. On the spring of the second year two the strongest buds are allowed to remain and the cans arising from them are spread horizontally on the trellis. These will form arms of the vine.

The ripe grape fruits may be kept on the vines until late December (in the warm graperies or artificially heated ones). Since then the beneficial effects of the grape seeds may be favored by the consumer. The active compounds of the grape seed are known to have antioxidant properties; flavonoids, vitamin E, and linoleic acid together with the procyanidins are presented in high concentrations in grape seeds and in the skin of the grape (though in lower concentrations).

The extracts from the grape seeds are used for handling such medical conditions as high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, pancreatitis, cancer, nausea, cholera, smallpox, eye infections, and kidney, skin, and liver diseases.
