Mangosteen Fruit – the Treasury of Xanthones

People who never tried the fruit of the mangosteen tree will, probably, not understand what all the hustle and bustle is about. On the other hand, gourmets – the real taste experts – confirm that mangosteen is one of the most delicious fruits in the world. Perhaps, that is why it is called “the Quinn of the fruits”.

Wonderful flavor and luxurious taste are, however, not the only treasures of mangosteen. Scientists and especially herbalists found another wonder about it: that is a great number of xanthones, which made the rind of the fruit their home.

The thing, which is the obvious miracle for such experts as scientists, is, actually, a complete enigma for all the other people, for those who do not even know such word – for the majority of us. So, let’s try to uncover the secret of the mysterious xanthones. Maybe then we will also praise them and the place of their residence as mush as the knowledgeable people do.

Xanthone is a unique organic compound formed of the biologically active group of molecules called phenols, which are structurally similar to flavonoids. For the time being, scientists have identified more than 200 types of naturally occurring xanthones. However, their natural occurrence is very restricted. Actually, they have been found in only two families of plants: Guttiferae and Gentianaceae.

Mangosteen belongs to the Guttiferae family. It is of great interest for the scientists, since they discovered more than 40 types of xanthones in the rind of the tree fruit. Alpha mangostin, gamma mangostin, normangostin, and Garcinone E are among them. Each type of xanthones has a unique formula, thus possessing unique properties.

It is suggested that xanthones can greatly influence the state of our health. Therefore, our bodies may significantly benefit from the use of the mangosteen fruit. Since xanthones are believed to be powerful anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tuberculotic, anti-tumor, and anti-oxidant weapon, many scientists state they can be very effective in overwhelming multiple diseases.

Cancer, cardiovascular disorders (ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension and thrombosis), tuberculosis, hypertension, arthritis, diabetes, skin disorders (psoriasis, seborrhea, eczema, etc.), dysentery, diarrhea, urinary infections, chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression can be eliminated with the help of the miraculous fruit and its constituents.

Mangosteen is also said to help slow down the aging process, boost immune system, and make the body fight off free radicals, thus protecting it from their devastating influence.

It all sounds very optimistic. The final note, however, may reduce the joy of those who think they have at last found the fountain of the everlasting youth: only six xanthones, which are the constituents of the mangosteen fruit, are studied to some extent. The rest of them remain a very promising and attractive material for the future scientific work and research, as well as the possible remedies to treat or, maybe, cure many diseases.
