Pain and Herbal Remedies
Pain is a subjective experience of the nervous system which carries information about inflammation, damage or near-damage in tissue, to the spinal cord and brain. The two most common forms of the pain reported nowadays are headache and a neck pain. The pain is usually classified as acute and chronic. The former has as its source soft tissue damage, infection and/or inflammation, the latter is essentially caused by the bombardment of the central nervous system with impulses causing changes in the neural response. Medicine defines pain as chronic if it lasts more than 6 months.
In the level of intensity pain may vary from slight through severe to agonizing. Pain usually reveals itself as throbbing, dull or sharp, nauseating, burning and shooting; it usually has emotional quality together with a sensed bodily location.
Pain is caused by the activation of the pain receptors. This happens when something injures sensitive tissues. This reaction is caused by the tissue damage from a mass or inflammation. Nerve damage provokes neurotic pane, this one being the result of a virus, trauma or a disease. It often happens that the cause of pain is not injury, but stress, insufficient sleep, physically unbalanced body mechanics or bad diet. Also, pain in various parts of the body may be the reason of the diseases of the inner organs located in that area.
Medical Approaches
Typically, prescription medications relieve the pain symptoms and are both taken orally and applied topically. Analgesic-based painkillers, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, muscle relaxants are prescribed to the patients to relieve and stop pain. Physical therapy, acupuncture (alternative medicine) and interventional treatments are also traditionally applied to the patients with various types of pain.

Traditional herbal medicine suggests a number of options to fight pain.
Ashwaganda has long been used by Ayurvedic medicine to reduce pain and inflammation. Powder and liquid extracts are used for tea and other preparations.
Feverfew’s active components reduce headache be inhibiting production of the agents that cause inflammation in the body. Anti-inflammatory and anti-pain effects are also attributed to ginger, which has been for long used to prevent and relieve migraine headaches, nausea and vomiting. Ginger also possesses anti-depressant and antioxidant actions; it is known as stimulant, dyspeptic, diaphoretic, diuretic, carminative and digestaid. Kava kava root is used for preparations that enhance muscle relaxation and relieve pain. Scientific researches proved its potential in treating depression and anxiety, which often accompanies pain and makes it worse. Licorice root has an ability to lock akey enzyme which allows natural steroids produced by the adrenal glands to reduce inflammation, thus being used as a strong pain-healing herb.
