Reishi and Cancer Treatment

Some time ago cancer belonged to the range of incurable but extremely rare diseases. Nowadays the number of people with cancer is constantly growing. This makes scientists all over the world work thoroughly to find a safe and effective treatment. They create new formulas, invent complex methods that are not always effective and have a lot of side effects. They trust modern technologies, but often forget about the ancient legacy of Oriental medicine, were Reishi mushrooms were used in cancer treatment and prevention for centuries.

For many years Reishi mushroom has been one of the most respected herbal remedies. It has been widely applied by Chinese and Japanese herbalists to treat different illnesses and diseases, including cancers. But are there any evidences, proving the anti-tumor action of Reishi?

Ganoderma lucidum (a scientific name for Reishi) is primarily composed of polysaccharides, triterpenoids, proteins, and amino acids. Studies have shown that polysaccharides are the most active elements, suppressing cancer cells thanks to their anti-tumor and immune modulating effects.

Researches, performed mainly in China and Japan, have indicated that Reishi mushrooms are capable of suppressing the adhesion and migration of highly invasive breast and prostate cancer cells. Reishi is said to be helpful in eliminating the negative impact of some medicines, used to treat cancer. It is known that certain anti-cancer medications may suppress red and white cells in human blood. Reishi can prevent this suppression and stimulate the formation of protein in the bone marrow.

Reishi mushrooms may help reduce the side effects, caused by radio and chemotherapy, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss and risk of infection.

Besides, Reishi also contains compounds, called ganoderic acids, that appear to be effective against liver cancer. It may enhance the immune response in people with later stage cancer.

A survey conducted among Japanese workers in the Nagano Prefecture showed that a regular consumption of the medicinal mushrooms was associated with a lower death rate from cancer than among other people in the Prefecture. The average cancer death rate among those, who consumed Reishi, dropped to 1 in 1000 in comparison to 1 in 600 rate among the general population.

Since the Ganoderma lucidum contains a lot of essential amino acids, it may also be used as a food supplement for cancer patients in order to enhance survival and reduce likelihood of metastasis.

Finally, Reishi mushroom has no evident side effects. It positively influences the human organism, helping it be in tonus and fight cancerous cells. Although Ganoderma lucidum has not been officially tested as the cancer treatment, we can still suggest that Reishi may soon begin a new era of cancer treatment and prevention.
