We live in the era of machines and high technologies, becoming more and more dependent on them. We believe in modern science that opens a way to the unknown and widens our possibilities. However, it only seems that all this makes our life easier; in reality it often makes it more difficult and complicated. That is why from time to time all of us need to return to our Nature treasuries. They have been praised by our ancestors and they may help us solve various problems (even serious and hopeless health conditions). Tribulus Terrestris (also called Puncture Vine) has a long history of use. Since ancient times the plant has been praised for its numerous benefits. It has always been and still is widely applied in folk medicine to treat various illnesses, to restore stamina, and boost energy. It should be mentioned that one of the most known and important benefits of Tribulus Terrestris is its ability to act as an aphrodisiac and improve sexual performance in men and women, as well as increase libido and prevent premature ejaculation. Energy and sex booster Puncture Vine drew attention of the scientists. Unfortunately, there was no scientific evidence that proved the information, so the only way out was to start investigation. The first researches aimed at studying Tribulus Terrestris aphrodisiac properties were performed on animals. Normal and castrated rats were taken to study sexual behavior and intracavernous pressure (blood circulation in penis). 40 rats were divided into 5 groups each having its own treatment. Two groups of rats (normal and castrated) were treated by distilled water; another two groups of normal and castrated animals received testosterone, and the fifth group of castrated rats was given Tribulus Terrestris. The results were quite promising: the prostate weight and ICP (intracavernous pressure) significantly increased in castrated rats treated with Tribulus Terrestris. Furthermore, a moderate improvement of sexual behavior was also observed. Animal studies have also shown that Tribulus Terrestris may stimulate erection and increase the number of sperm and its mobility. All the data mentioned above has also been proved in humans. Currently, we have the results of more than nine serious studies that confirm Tribulus Terrestris efficiency in the treatment of sexual disorders. The studies show that the plant enhances sexual desire and makes erections more frequent and strong. The herbal extract stimulates and improves the production of spermatozoids, making them more mobile and viable. Dioscin, portodioscin, diosgenin, which are the main Tribulus Terrestris phytochemicals, are responsible for all the plant’s actions. They relax smooth muscles and improve blood circulation in the corpus cavernosa of the penis. It should be added that using Tribulus Terrestris not only stimulates sexual desire and performance, but also gives support to the hormonal system. This hormone-balancing property is especially good for women experiencing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and during menopause. Taking Tribulus Terrestris extract alleviates the symptoms of PMS, decreasing the occurrence of sweating, hot flashes, depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Tribulus Terrestris extract may also help treat infertility both in men and women. One open study has shown the improvement of ovulation in 67% of women who took the plant’s extract. That led to the successful pregnancies in 6% of women taking part in the experiment. These results are not so great, but compared to drug treatment, they have no side effects, which is very important for many people, who have to stop pharmaceutical treatment due to severe adverse reactions.
