Vitamin B6 Medicinal Uses

Vitamin B6 is essential for keeping hormonal changes in balance. Hormones are responsible for your mood swings. So, whenever you are in high spirit or feeling blue, certain hormones do all the job. As it raises serotonin, which is responsible for good mood, it is effective in treating depression.

Recommended daily dose

You can find vitamin B6 in form of tablets, lozenges or softgels. Generally it is always present in B complex vitamins or in multivitamins of different brands. If you are looking for vitamin B6 sold individually keep in mind that it can also be called pyridoxine, pyridoxamine and some other derivatives of the word.

Daily recommended dose is the following:
  • General: 1.3 mg of Vitamin B6 for males and females of the age of 19 - 50
  • Teenagers: 1.3 mg for males and 1.2 mg for females
  • Children: 1 mg for the age of 9 to 13, and half of the dose for the age of 4 to 9
  • Children under 3 years - 0.5 mg
  • Infants (7 months to 1 year) - 0.3 mg


Do not give vitamin B6 supplement to a child without your doctor’s initiative.

  • Older people: 1.7 mg for males and 1.5 mg for females
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding: 1.9  - 2.0 mg
  • Prevention or treatment of certain states or diseases: from 3.0 mg but not more than 100 mg daily (dosage depends on the condition)

All these recommended doses are the minimum that your body needs for healthy functioning. Try to consume the food, containing vitamin B6. If it is not enough, and you use supplement, start with low dose and increase it gradually to the needed norm. Vitamin B6 is better be taken after your meal with a full glass of water.

Precautions and interactions

Too much of vitamin consumption (in supplement) can be rather dangerous. Always consult your doctor when you start taking vitamins, especially in doses more than 1.2 mg and in case of children. Doses higher than 100- 150 mg per day can cause imbalance and some other neurological disorders. In rare cases vitamin B6 may cause allergic skin reactions in children and in adults (when in high doses).

Side effects of vitamin B6 supplements intake include stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, sensitivity to sunlight.

Vitamin B6 supplement interact with plenty of medications, that is another reason to consult your doctor before taking it. Vitamin B6 can interfere with some medications you take in case of anemia, seizures, Parkinson's disease. It also interferes with antidepressants and antibiotics treatment (especially tetracycline). Correct your dosage of vitamin B6 with your doctor if you are treating asthma, arthritis, tuberculosis and high blood pressure.
