Yohimbine is the pharmaceutical agent, which is extracted from the bark of yohimbe tree, that grows wild throughout the tropical West Africa. Yohimbe bark contains also other alkaloids believed to have effects similar to yohimbine, but yohimbine is supposed to be one of the most effective compounds of yohimbe bark. Yohimbine has been medicaly used to treat sexual dysfunction for many decades, and it does this with all aspects of sexuality. So it gives sexual desire and performance, enhances erections and skin sensitivity in men and women. The use of yohimbine is also accompanied by moderate emotional excitement. Before Viagra hit the market, yohimbine was the only medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of impotence. However, yohimbine is not working for all men and there are certain side effects associated with its use. It can take up to 6 weeks to see improvements in sexual dysfunction and the same results are not experienced by all people. Nevertheless the majority of people taking yohimbine daily report satisfaction with its effects. Yohimbine is an alkaloid monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor that blocks adrenergic receptors. This leads to an increase in dilation of blood vessels. Enlargement of blood vessels, especially in the sexual organs, explains the success of yohimbine in treating sexual dysfunction and giving more pleasure to both men and women.
